The Overnight is an American single-camera comedy series that aired on Pun Intended from May 23, 2007 to March 17, 2009. It was one of the two original series produced by the network at launch, alongside Counter Offer. The series ran for two seasons and 29 episodes and averaged 5.42 million viewers across its run.

The series is set during the overnight shift of an unnamed 24-hour copy and print center in an unspecified mid-sized American city. It follows shift supervisor Renata, aspiring novelist Dennis, and the inexplicably cheerful Lewis. The show is absurdist in tone. A subplot running across both seasons involves Dennis's manuscript, which begins exhibiting unexplained changes in the third episode; the show never explains these changes and Dennis does not report them to anyone. The subplot was written into the pilot with the stated intention of never being resolved on screen.

Premise

The Overnight takes place entirely within a single 24-hour copy and print center during the hours of 10 PM to 6 AM. The shop is never named and its city is never identified. The series is structured around small, self-contained events: a large print job, an unusual customer request, equipment that behaves unexpectedly. The comedy is observational and unhurried.

Cast and Characters

Renata is the overnight shift supervisor. She keeps a detailed shift log and does not speculate about things she cannot verify. Dennis is a part-time employee and aspiring novelist who stores his manuscript in the break room. He manages the unexplained changes to it with notable restraint. Lewis is described in the show's internal documentation as "inexplicably cheerful." He takes a different route to work each night and has never repeated one.

Production

The Overnight was shot on a purpose-built set inside the network's Columbus facility. Derek Kellerman served as executive producer. Marcus Kellerman confirmed in a 2008 interview that the writers agreed from the outset that the manuscript changes would never be explained on screen. The show's visual approach used available light augmented by practical sources — overhead fluorescents, machine display glow, parking lot light through the front window.

Reception

The Overnight launched to 4.76 million viewers with no advance press coverage. Season 1 averaged 5.37 million; Season 2 averaged 5.55 million, peaking at 6.54 million for the series finale "Morning." The network renewed it for Season 2 in October 2007 citing strong audience retention data. A cable industry piece in early 2009 described it as "the most quietly adventurous thing currently on American television." The series finale drew 6.54 million viewers on March 17, 2009.
