Maverick is an American animated spy action-comedy television series that aired on Pun Intended from September 15, 2009 to October 1, 2014. Produced by Kellerman Broadcasting LLC, the series ran for five seasons and 124 episodes. It was the network's designated flagship original series from its premiere through its conclusion and remains the highest-rated original series in Pun Intended history by average viewership across a completed run.
The series premiered alongside Kanzai and Superbad: The Series on September 15, 2009 as part of the network's first major original programming expansion. Episode titles follow a bird-related pun format across all five seasons, a convention established before production began on the pilot and maintained through the series finale. The show is episodic; no serialized narrative runs between episodes.
Maverick's series finale, a two-part special event titled "The Last Migration," aired on October 1, 2014 and drew 31.44 million viewers for its second part — the highest single-episode viewership figure in Pun Intended original programming history. The series was followed by a reboot, Maverick: Rewind, which premiered November 9, 2015.
Maverick is an animated spy action-comedy in which the comedic elements take precedence over the action. The show follows a team of operatives navigating missions, bureaucratic obstacles, internal rivalries, and miscommunications within a fictional intelligence organization. The spy framework functions primarily as a vehicle for comic situations rather than as a source of genuine tension or stakes.
Episodes are self-contained. A mission is introduced, complications arise — typically from within the team rather than from external opposition — and a resolution of varying competence is reached by the close of each episode. No serialized narrative runs between episodes. Characters are consistent across seasons but storylines do not carry over.
The show's bird-related episode title format — a consistent feature since the first episode — is one of its most recognized traits. Titles are puns constructed around bird names or avian terminology and carry a loose thematic relationship to each episode's events. The format was maintained across all 124 episodes including the two-part series finale.
Maverick was developed by Kellerman Broadcasting as the centerpiece of the Fall 2009 original programming expansion. Where the other two Fall 2009 originals — Kanzai and Superbad: The Series — were adapted or co-produced properties, Maverick was an entirely original concept developed internally. It was designated the network's flagship original from the outset, a status it held for the entirety of its five-season run.
The decision to produce the flagship original as an animated series was not predetermined. Marcus Kellerman confirmed in a 2010 interview that live-action formats were considered before the network committed to animation, citing cost, visual consistency, and creative freedom in the action sequences as the primary factors in the decision. The bird-related pun title format was established in the writers' room before the pilot was produced and treated as a non-negotiable constraint throughout the series.
Maverick's episode order grew with each renewal: 21 episodes in Season 1, 23 in Season 2, 29 in Season 3, 23 in Season 4, and 26 regular episodes plus the two-part finale in Season 5. The show was never placed on hiatus.
Maverick premiered on September 15, 2009 to 10.02 million viewers — the highest debut figure for any Pun Intended original to that point and the strongest of the three Fall 2009 premieres. Its first season averaged 11.04 million viewers. Season 2 averaged 14.58 million; Season 3 averaged 18.31 million, becoming the first Pun Intended original season to average above 15 million viewers. Season 4 averaged 22.00 million. Season 5 averaged 27.81 million including the finale.
The series finale, "The Last Migration," aired October 1, 2014 as a two-hour special event. Part 1 drew 29.17 million viewers; Part 2 drew 31.44 million, establishing a network record for original programming that has not been surpassed as of 2017. A 2011 cable industry trade profile of Pun Intended described Maverick as "the flagship that actually earned the title."
Following the conclusion of the original series, a reboot titled Maverick: Rewind — counted as the sixth iteration of the Maverick series — premiered November 9, 2015. It maintains the bird-related pun title format and animated format of the original.
